What good care looks like

Good home nursing is more than completing a task. For tube feeding, it means a trained nurse who works cleanly and gently, checks how the patient is doing, keeps the family informed, and writes down what they found so the patient's doctor stays in the loop. The best sign of good care is that nothing is a surprise — the family knows what was done, what to watch for, and when the next visit is.

Sitting up matters most

The biggest risk in tube feeding is feed going the wrong way, into the lungs. The single most important habit is keeping the person sitting up during a feed and for a while afterwards. A good nurse teaches this first, because it prevents the most serious complication — aspiration pneumonia.

Checking before you feed

Good care means never feeding blindly. Before a feed, the nurse checks the tube is secure and in the right place, and — for an NG tube — confirms its position the way they were taught. A tube that has slipped is picked up before any feed goes in, not after.

Keeping the tube clear

A blocked tube is a common, avoidable problem. Good care means flushing the tube with water before and after feeds and medicines, giving medicines in a form that won't clog it, and knowing what to try if it does block — before it becomes an emergency change.

Clean hands, clean feed

Feed is a perfect place for germs to grow. Good care means clean hands, clean equipment, not letting a feed hang too long, and storing opened feed properly — small habits that keep tummy upsets and infections away.

When to call for help

Call for help if:

• The person coughs, chokes, or becomes breathless during or after a feed — this can mean aspiration
• The tube comes out or has clearly moved
• There's vomiting, a swollen or painful tummy, or feed leaking around the site
